I made my decision, it is happening.
It is a crazy idea. Or at least that is what most would say.
But to me, and maybe to you too, it is the most amazing thing I have ever done.
Are you ready for my big decision?
I am moving to Australia!
Now I can hear you think
Like – for real?
Yes, yes and yes. I am leaving The Netherlands, Amsterdam, tulips and green landscapes behind to move to the other side of the world.
And I bet you’re wondering where that crazy idea came from and how I made this decision.

The start of my love for Australia
Let’s start at the beginning. 2 years ago I went to visit Australia (2014). I just finished my Accountancy study and got offered a job at my former internship.
This was an amazing opportunity that I didn’t wanted to pass: on one condition.
Before entering the world of the adults, I decided to treat myself on something that was on my bucket list since forever. Traveling through Australia.
I booked my trip. 5,5 weeks Australia, from Sydney to Cairns to Alice Springs and to Darwin. Oh, if I only knew then that this trip was the beginning of a new book
Australia took my from the moment I arrived. I loved everything about it, the people, the nature and the weather (even though I got burned so badly, I had a face like a tomato the whole trip). But what was it that got me thinking about moving?
The idea of moving to Australia
The idea was always there. To be completely honest with you, The Netherlands never felt like home. There has always been something in me that knew I was not going to grow old there. And then there was Australia and it all made sense. There are so many things I love about this place, but the most important one is that it feels like home.
Traveling through Australia was an amazing experience. I was there for 5,5 weeks and these were the most life changing weeks ever. Never would I have imagined myself flying to the other side of the world to discover a foreign country by myself. But I did do it and I learned so much about myself, the world and our dreams. Traveling to a foreign country is overwhelming and inspiring at the same time. The most important lesson I learned while traveling on my own was this:
If you don’t make decisions for your own happiness, no one else will. It is your responsibility to follow your dreams and to live the life you always wanted.
Chasing my dream, that is what this is all about.
And I can hear you think right now – good on you Michelle, for traveling and discovering. But what was is that made you decide that traveling wasn’t enough?
What was it that made you go from thinking of moving, to letting go of all the maybes and say: I am moving to Australia? Well, let me tell you what it was…
The decision – the most important one of all
But how did I end up from traveling in Australia to wanting to live their permanently?
The fact that I always knew I wanted to move out of The Netherlands helped a lot. There is this burning desire to feel like you are home somewhere and The Netherlands wasn’t that for me. Do you feel like this too? Having this desire to live somewhere else is the first sign of making your decision to move.
The second part of the decision is the where. You don’t feel like home where you are right now, but where is home then?
Australia felt like home to me from day one and that was what made my desire from moving in general changed to moving to Australia. The feeling of being at home is a difficult feeling to describe. I think you have to experience it for yourself to understand it completely, but I will try to explain it.
It is the feeling of comfort, happiness, excitement and most of all, the feeling of being alive.
And if you have felt it, the feeling of being exactly where you were meant to be, then you know exactly what I am talking about.
Feeling like home in Australia was the second step into making my permanent decision. – The desire and ideas were all there, I knew where I wanted to be, but there is one question:
What is it that changes it from a desire – to something you absolutely want to make reality?
The fact that the desire stays, even when you are back home. That is what eventually makes the decision.
We all know that traveling isn’t the same as living in a place. This is the reason why I kind of let the idea rest for a bit after I came back from my trip. I was in such a rush of all the gorgeous places I saw, I had to settle down for a bit. I put the idea of moving permanently aside for a while and didn’t make any steps into emigration, even though the idea never really left my mind.
A year later I started to search for information about moving, emigration and how I would get started with this process. My starting point was the internet, which is a great source of information. On the other hand, the internet can be quite overwhelming and people can say different things. The one thing that gave me the best information and gave me the ultimate confirmation that I wanted to move to Australia was visiting an emigration expo. This visit was the best thing ever and looking back this was where I made my decision.
What did the emigration expo do for my decision?
The expo was the first time I openly talked about my plan. The fact that I signed up for this day, took my dad and was openly speaking about my idea made it real. At the expo were a lot of companies who can help you to realise your move. For me, seeing that it was possible, but also seeing other people go for it, made me realise how bad I actually wanted to do it.
This was it. This was when I decided I was moving to Australia permanently. I saw it was possible, that it could be my life and I knew then and there: this is it.
So here we are, decision has been made and the journey has started.
In the following period I will take you along my adventure in moving to Australia.
